South Africa have suffered a setback against of the New Year's Test against India, which is set to take place from 3-7 January at Newlands in Cape Town.

The condition deteriorated as he continued to bowl on the third day. He underwent scans on Friday, December 29, which revealed the extent of his injury.

No replacement has been named after Head coach Shukri Conrad decided to release Coetzee from the squad as a precautionary measure.

South Africa are leading the two-match series 1-0, having notched up a solid win at Centurion by an innings and 32 runs.

In the WTC 2023-25 standings, South Africa are at the top with a perfect 100% points percentage.

Meanwhile, India, who were docked two WTC points for falling two overs short in the first Test, are in sixth place with a points percentage of 38.89%.

Earlier, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma took no further part in the first match after injuring his left hamstring on the first morning.

Coach Shukri Conrad confirmed later that Bavuma would not play in the second Test.

Former captain Elgar, who led the team on the field after Bavuma´s injury, will captain the team in Cape Town.
